I remember the days of long ago; I meditate on all your works and consider what your hands have done. Psalm, 143.5

Rather than waste time pondering whether God exists, David appeals to God on the basis of what God has already accomplished: creation, the Exodus from slavery in Egypt, forming the nation of Israel, establishing him in the Promised Land. David might have added his own anointing as king... Our equivalent might focus on the saving work of Jesus, Pentecost, the unlikely spreading of the Church, our own conversion to Christ... The important thing, when our back is to the wall, is to focus on facts rather than playing with conjecture. The infamous cliché about there being "no atheists in the trenches" concentrates our minds when circumstances are benign. Not only will this render us more productive - and faithful - in the present, it can prepare us for the uncertainties of the future.
