"Return to me," declares the Lord Almighty, "and I will return to you..." Zechariah 1.3

Like his immediate predecessor, Haggai, the prophet Zechariah operated in the wake of the Israelites' return to Judah. His message is one of encouragement, though it begins with an exhortation to repentance. But is that not how we come to faith - by repenting of our sins, affirming Jesus as Saviour and Lord and committing to a lifetime of obedience in the power of the Holy Spirit?

Another striking feature of Zechariah's prophecy is his anticipation of God's Messiah, to which Jesus appealed when affirming his credentials. The book itself splits into two main parts: the first having to do with 8 night visions and the second with 2 prophetic oracles. The message soars to the heights of eschatology and revelation, yet it is grounded in reality. Ultimately it speaks of God's total sovereignty - in all circumstances and forever!
