"Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know." Jeremiah 33.3
In rejecting dualism - the mode of thought that separates one thing from another - Scottish theologian TF Torrance paved the way for the reunion of science and religion. He contended that each needed the other: science is the method by which humankind is able to make sense of creation, while religion provides the appropriate reference point for scientists, reminding them that they are not operating within a meaningless vacuum.
Torrance's insight is both a blessing and a challenge. It heals the false rift that put science and religion at odds for so long and has done so much damage, robbing science of its spiritual bearings and leaving religion looking increasingly irrelevant and out of touch. Reconciliation requires re-familiarisation: a fresh interest in science for those of us who have ignored it, alongside an openness within the scientific community to the possibility of a Creator and all that implies in terms of relationship and accountability.
What an invigorating prospect! Step forward those who are already in the game: believing scientists, we need your experience and insights. And may the Holy Spirit fill us all with a fresh sense of wonder and curiosity...
